BASIC LAW
This is our most popular course. Three days of intensive law training with many case histories from the regional press. Subjects include libel, contempt of court, banning orders, juveniles, how to cover the courts and crime stories, rehabilitation of offenders, sexual offences, new laws, banning orders and other subjects. It is an ideal course for newcomers ( young and old ), or those taking NCTJ preliminary exams leading to the National Certificate.

BASIC SUB-EDITING
An ideal two day course for newcomers to subbing who are either reporters with little experience of subbing, ex production people in need of re-training or people with up to six months experience on the subs table. The two day course covers all the basic skills required including intro re-writing, story structure, use of shorter words and phrases to produce tighter copy, effective headline writing, legal points for subs to watch for, handling pictures and general design. During the course delegates sub a number of stories. A pack of course notes is given to each delegate.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT
A one day course on how to use the act, what exemptions apply and how to appeal against refusal of information. Delegates study how a variety of newspapers have successfully used the act through a wide range of examples from the regional press.

HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORKS
An ideal course for reporters who have not been to college who need to have a basic understanding of how local government works, the role of officers and councillors, who does what, local government finance, privilege, how to cover a council meeting, the Local Government Act 2000, cabinets, elected mayors, scrutiny committees, town and parish councils, standards board and election procedures. This three day course is popular with newcomers who will be covering a council and people seeking underpinning knowledge towards the NCTJ preliminary examination. It is also a useful refresher for those taking the National Certificate examination.

HOW TO COVER THE COURTS
A one day course in court reporting which can include a visit to a magistrates court plus lectures on the different restrictions, who is who in court, Contempt of Court Act 1981, Magistrates Court Act 1980, Crime and Disorder Act and more. NB This course is only on offer in-house when a visit will be paid to a local court.

HOW TO INTERVIEW PROPERLY
The interview is the key to writing a good story. Too many reporters have had little or no training in this basic skill. They don't know how to structure an interview, how to probe in depth for the real story rather than just any story and fail to ask the right questions. This one day course takes delegates through all the different interview techniques and shows how to structure the interview, how to follow a seven point formula, how to get back to the point of the story without interrupting the interviewee's flow and the many pitfalls of interviewing over the telephone.

HOW TO RUN A GOOD NEWS DESK
An ideal course for news editors, their assistants or chief reporters who need some training in how to run the news desk, or senior reporters being considered for promotion. The course covers all the basics, points out many of the problems news editors encounter and then identifies the solutions. In addition time is spent on the non-journalistic organisation/management skills required to run a successful news desk, spotting the real stories, delegating work fairly, motivating reporters and managing time well. The second afternoon is spent analysing how to handle people and how to get the best out of a diverse team.

This one day course is aimed at all photographers, who need to know as much about the law as reporters. It covers the case histories of a number of regional newspaper libel actions involving photographs, photos which were in contempt of court, privacy, copyright, trespass, police requests for photos and brings delegates up to date on new laws.

A one day course specifically for subs showing the libel dangers in headlines, photographs, agency copy plus how subs need to be on the lookout for copy which identifies victims of rape and sexual attack and juveniles the subject of banning orders.

MANAGEMENT FOR EDITORIAL STAFF
This is a course for anyone who handles that precious resource - people. From editors to chief photographers, from news editors to chief subs and sports editors, they need to build a team and get the best out of it. Running a busy editorial department involves managing people well. On this course delegates will learn how to lead from the front, manage their time better, delegate work properly and build and motivate a team. In addition there are two lively sessions on how to handle difficult people.In addition to the above we run one day sports editing courses and one day refreshers in subbing and news editing.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE REFRESHER AND MOCK EXAM
Delegates spend the first two days doing a mixture of papers in all three sections and listening to lectures on how to prepare for the exam day and approach each paper. The third day is a full mock exam. All test papers are marked and returned to editors along with a detailed course assessment which indicates areas needing attention prior to the exam.

VILLAGE AND COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENTS TRAINING
Many newspapers employ an army of readers to cover small communities within their circulation areas. We have a one day training course ideally suited to training these correspondents in some of the basics of the job which also aims to encourage them to provide more than club reports. This course has already been used by a number of evening and weekly papers with great success. Training usually takes place in house on a Saturday.
